As a first-time mom I was of course naturally scared bringing my daughter home for the first time and overly worried about so many things first time parents worry about. However, my main source of worry was safe sleeping and SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). But by following The ABCs of Safe Sleep created by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) you can ensure your baby has a safe sleep environment to prevent SIDS and ease your mind. The ABC’s of Safe Sleep are 3 very simple and easy to remember steps you can take to ensure your baby is put to sleep safely. Babies should always sleep Alone, on their Back, in a Crib.
A is for Alone.
According to the AAP it is always recommended that when placing your baby down for a nap or to sleep for the night they sleep alone. This means you should remove any other items from their safe sleeping area, such as blankets, pillows, stuff animals, and also toys. If you are worried about your baby staying warm throughout the night without a blanket, safe sleep solutions include sleeper onesies, wearable blankets, and sleep sacks.
B is for Back.
Whenever putting your baby to sleep in their safe sleep spot always place them on their back. You might think that your baby would be more comfortable laying on their stomach or even their side. However, if your baby is laid in either of those positions this could lead to a dangerous situation where their mouth and nose are covered and their breathing is being restricted. To prevent a dangerous situation like this always place your baby on their back. However, if your baby is strong enough to roll over on their side or stomach on their own it is okay to let them stay in that position. Just make sure they are in their safe sleeping spot. Always check with your baby’s doctor before letting them sleep in those positions.
C is for Crib.
Once your baby comes home from the hospital you want to make sure you have a safe sleep space for them. Safe sleep spaces include a bassinet, crib, or playpen, with a firm mattress and well-fitted sheets if necessary. It is recommended to have your baby sleep in the same room as you until they are at least 1 year of age. Please remember that it is not safe to bring your baby into bed with you, even just for a nap. The safest place for your baby to sleep is always in their safe sleep spot.
